Local Driving Risk

Western Australia Road Conditions That Cause Claims

The damage that actually gets charged back to drivers in WA follows a clear pattern. These are the three risks worth understanding before you collect the keys.

Perth (PER) & Broome (BME) Airports

Covers pickups from all major operators at Perth’s terminal precincts and the Broome depots that serve Kimberley touring.

South West & Margaret River

Karri forest roads around Pemberton and the Cape-to-Cape are narrow, shaded and lined with gravel verges — a frequent source of scrapes and stone chips.

Coral Coast & Outback Highways

The North West Coastal Highway and Great Northern Highway carry road trains for hundreds of kilometres between fuel stops, with heavy stone spray and stray livestock.

WA Guide

Rental Car Excess Insurance in Western Australia: What to Know

Distance is what makes WA different

Western Australia is the largest state in the country and rental pricing reflects it. Damage excess on a standard WA hire agreement commonly sits between $4,000 and $6,500, and 4WDs hired for Kimberley or Pilbara travel routinely sit above that. The practical issue is exposure time: a Perth-to-Broome run is over 2,200 km, so you are simply on the road far longer than a typical east-coast hire, with more opportunity for stone damage.

Stone chips and road trains

On the Great Northern and North West Coastal Highways, road trains up to 53.5 metres long throw significant stone spray. Windscreen chipping is close to routine on these routes, and a chip that spreads into a crack means full windscreen replacement — often charged directly to your card on return. Windscreen and glass cover is included on every Rental Shield tier, which is not true of most counter waivers.

Unsealed roads are the exclusion to watch

This matters more in WA than anywhere else. Most rental agreements prohibit travel on unsealed roads unless you have hired a specific 4WD product that permits it, and excess cover follows the rental contract: if you breach the hire agreement by driving a prohibited surface, the claim will not be paid. Gibb River Road, most of the Kimberley tracks and many station roads fall into this category. Confirm in writing with your rental operator what surfaces your vehicle is permitted on.

South West touring

The Margaret River and Cape-to-Cape region is the state’s busiest leisure hire corridor. Roads through the karri forests around Pemberton and Northcliffe are narrow, deeply shaded and edged with soft gravel — conditions that produce kerbing, mirror strikes and tyre damage. All are covered on sealed public roads. See what each tier includes before choosing.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions — WA Car Hire

Standard WA hire agreements typically carry a damage excess of $4,000 to $6,500 — among the highest in the country because of the state’s touring distances. Four-wheel drives hired for Kimberley or Pilbara travel often exceed that range. Rental Shield reduces the excess you are liable for to $0, up to your policy limit.
No. Cover applies to legally open, paved roads. Most rental agreements separately prohibit unsealed-road travel unless you have hired a specific 4WD product that permits it, and breaching your hire contract voids the claim. Always confirm in writing with your rental operator which surfaces your vehicle is permitted on.
Yes. Windscreen and glass cover is included on every tier, which matters on the Great Northern and North West Coastal Highways where stone spray from road trains makes chipping very common. If a chip spreads and the rental company charges you for a full replacement, you claim that amount back.
Yes. Four-wheel drives, campervans and motorhomes are all quotable — select the vehicle type when you get your quote and the premium adjusts for the class. Remember that the sealed-road condition still applies regardless of vehicle type.
Yes. Cover follows the rental period you nominate, not a specific route, so one-way and multi-leg hires are fine. Set your pickup and return dates to match the rental agreement — if you extend the hire, extend the policy to match.
Every driver properly listed as authorised on the rental agreement is covered under the same policy at no extra cost. The one thing that voids cover is someone driving who is not named on the rental contract — that restriction comes from the hire agreement itself.
