1. About This Product

Rental Shield Rental Car Excess Insurance is a reimbursement product designed to cover the excess and other charges that a rental car company may impose on you following accidental damage to, or theft of, a rental vehicle during your rental period.

This product is not a comprehensive motor vehicle insurance policy. It is specifically designed to reimburse you for the costs the rental car company charges you as a result of a covered event.

3. Who Can Buy This Product

This product is available to individuals who:

  • Are aged 18 years or older
  • Hold a valid driver's licence recognised in Australia
  • Are renting a vehicle from a licensed rental car operator in Australia (or overseas, for Premium and Ultimate plans)
  • Reside in or have a mailing address in Australia

This product does not cover vehicles rented via peer-to-peer or private sharing platforms.

4. Coverage Overview

All Rental Shield plans provide:

6. Vehicle Types & Surcharges

The base daily rate applies to standard car rentals. Additional daily surcharges apply for other vehicle types to reflect the higher risk profile:

All vehicles must be under 4.5 tonnes GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass). Larger vehicles may require specific approval.

7. How to Purchase

  1. Visit rentalshield.com.au and complete the quote form with your rental details (state, dates, vehicle type)
  2. Select your preferred coverage plan (Essential, Premium, or Ultimate)
  3. Enter your personal details and payment information
  4. Your policy is issued instantly and emailed to you immediately

8. Policy Period

Your policy covers the period between the pickup date and return date specified when purchasing your policy. Coverage begins at the time you collect the rental vehicle and ends when you return it to the rental company.

If your rental period extends beyond your policy end date, you must purchase additional coverage before your current policy expires. Events occurring outside the policy period are not covered.

9. What Is Covered

Subject to the terms of your chosen plan, Rental Shield will reimburse you for the following charges levied by the rental car company as a result of a covered event during your rental period:

  • The rental car excess charged by the rental company
  • Damage repair costs charged to you (up to your coverage limit)
  • Administrative and processing fees related to the claim
  • Towing costs following an accident
  • Key replacement and lockout charges
  • Other costs as specified in your plan's coverage schedule (see Section 5)

10. What Is Not Covered

The following are excluded from all Rental Shield policies:

  • Damage resulting from driving while intoxicated (alcohol or drugs) or while your licence is suspended
  • Damage arising from a breach of the rental agreement or local traffic laws
  • Vehicles rented from peer-to-peer, car-sharing, or private rental platforms
  • Personal belongings lost, stolen, or damaged inside the rental vehicle
  • Mechanical or electrical failure not caused by an accident or collision
  • Use of the vehicle for racing, speed testing, or on a racetrack
  • Damage occurring outside the policy coverage dates
  • Vehicles not matching the type declared in your policy
  • Commercial freight or public transport use (unless specifically insured as Bus/Coach)
  • Third-party liability, personal injury, or death
  • Loss of income, travel expenses, accommodation costs, or other consequential losses
  • Claims lodged more than 30 days after the incident
  • Fraudulent or misleading claims

11. Making a Claim

11.1 Steps to Claim

  1. Report immediately: Notify the rental company of the incident/damage at the time it occurs
  2. Collect documentation: Obtain all relevant paperwork from the rental company — damage report, excess invoice, repair costs
  3. Lodge your claim: Submit your claim through your Rental Shield dashboard or email info@rentalshield.com.au within 30 days of the incident
  4. Provide evidence: Upload or email the following:
    • Copy of your rental agreement
    • Damage/incident report from the rental company
    • Invoice or receipt showing the excess/charges you paid
    • Photographs of the damage
    • Police report (if applicable, e.g. theft, vandalism, or collision with another vehicle)

11.2 Claim Processing Timeline

  • Acknowledgement: Within 24 hours of receiving your claim
  • Assessment: Completed within 5 business days (standard) or 2 business days (Priority/Ultimate plans)
  • Payment: Approved claims are paid to your nominated bank account within 3 business days of approval

11.3 Additional Information

We may request additional documentation or information to verify your claim. Failure to provide requested information within 14 days may result in your claim being declined.

12. Claim Limits & Excess

Maximum coverage: $100,000 AUD per policy. This is the maximum total amount payable across all claims under a single policy.

Excess: $0 (zero). You pay no excess when making a claim under any Rental Shield plan.

Payment: Claims are paid as a reimbursement — you must first pay the rental company, then we reimburse you upon claim approval.

13. Cooling-Off Period

You have a 14-day cooling-off period from the date of purchase. During this period, you may cancel your policy for a full refund, provided:

  • Your rental period has not yet commenced, and
  • No claim has been lodged under the policy

14. Cancellation

Before pickup date: Cancel any time before your rental starts for a full refund. No questions asked.

After pickup date: Cancellation requests after your rental period has commenced will be assessed individually. A partial refund may be offered for unused days.

After a claim: Policies where a claim has been lodged or paid are not eligible for cancellation refund.

We reserve the right to cancel your policy if you have provided false or misleading information, or if we reasonably suspect fraud. In such cases, no refund will be issued.

15. Complaints

If you have a complaint about our products or services, please contact us:

  • We aim to acknowledge complaints within 2 business days
  • We aim to resolve complaints within 10 business days

If you are not satisfied with our response, you may escalate your complaint to:

  • The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) — www.accc.gov.au
  • Your state or territory Fair Trading or Consumer Affairs office
