1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing, browsing, or using the Rental Shield website (rentalshield.com.au) and purchasing any of our rental car excess insurance products, you agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not use our services.

These terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you ("the Customer", "you") and Rental Shield ("we", "us", "our"), ABN 19 686 732 043.

2. Services

Rental Shield provides rental car excess insurance to individuals renting vehicles from licensed rental car operators in Australia. Our service reimburses you for the rental car excess and certain other costs charged by the rental company following an incident during your rental period.

We offer three coverage tiers — Essential, Premium, and Ultimate — each providing up to $100,000 maximum cover with $0 policy excess on eligible claims. Full details of what each plan covers are available on our Coverage page and in our Product Disclosure Statement.

3. Eligibility

To purchase a policy from Rental Shield, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Hold a valid, current driver's licence recognised in Australia
  • Be renting a vehicle from a licensed rental car operator (peer-to-peer platforms are not covered)
  • Be renting a vehicle that falls within our covered vehicle categories (Car, Campervan, Motorhome/RV, Bus/Small Coach, 4x4)
  • Have an Australian residential or mailing address

4. Coverage & Plans

4.1 All Plans Include

Every Rental Shield policy includes the following as standard, regardless of the plan selected:

  • Collision damage reimbursement up to $100,000
  • Theft of the rental vehicle
  • Windscreen and glass damage (including chips and cracks)
  • Tyre damage, undercarriage damage, and key replacement
  • Administrative and processing fees charged by the rental company
  • Towing costs following an accident
  • Coverage for all authorised drivers listed on the rental agreement
  • $0 policy excess on eligible claims

4.2 Premium Plan Additions

In addition to Essential coverage, the Premium plan also covers:

  • Headlights, mirrors, and exterior lights
  • Roof and hail damage
  • Door dents and panel damage
  • Misfuelling damage
  • Overseas rental coverage
  • Priority claim processing

4.3 Ultimate Plan Additions

In addition to Premium coverage, the Ultimate plan also covers:

  • Premium and luxury vehicle coverage
  • Full interior damage (seats, dashboard, upholstery)
  • Scratch and cosmetic paint damage
  • Single vehicle rollover
  • Water and flood damage
  • 24/7 priority claims support
  • Dedicated claims manager

4.4 Vehicle Surcharges

Base daily rates apply to standard car rentals. Additional daily surcharges apply for other vehicle types:

  • Campervan: +$3.00/day
  • Motorhome / RV: +$4.00/day
  • Bus / Small Coach: +$5.00/day
  • 4x4: +$6.00/day

5. Pricing & Payment

All prices are quoted in Australian Dollars (AUD) and are inclusive of GST where applicable. Your total premium is calculated based on: your chosen plan, vehicle type, and rental duration (number of days).

Payment is processed securely via Stripe. We accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. Your payment details are never stored on our servers — they are encrypted and handled entirely by Stripe (PCI DSS Level 1 compliant).

Your policy is issued immediately upon successful payment and delivered to the email address provided at checkout.

6. Cancellation & Refunds

Full refund: You may cancel your policy at any time before your rental pickup date for a complete refund. No questions asked.

After pickup date: If your rental period has commenced, cancellation and refund requests will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Partial refunds may be offered for unused portions of coverage.

After a claim: Policies where a claim has been lodged or paid are not eligible for refund.

7. Claims Process

  1. Report the incident to the rental company immediately and obtain all relevant documentation (accident/damage report, repair invoices, excess charge receipt)
  2. Lodge your claim through your Rental Shield dashboard or by emailing info@rentalshield.com.au within 30 days of the incident
  3. Provide supporting documents including: rental agreement, damage/incident report from the rental company, invoice or receipt showing the excess amount charged, photos of the damage, and a police report (if applicable)
  4. Claim assessment — we will acknowledge your claim within 24 hours and aim to complete assessment within 5 business days
  5. Payment — approved claims are paid directly to your nominated bank account within 3 business days of approval

8. Your Obligations

As a Rental Shield policyholder, you must:

  • Provide accurate information when purchasing your policy
  • Comply with all terms of your rental agreement with the rental car operator
  • Comply with all applicable road rules and laws
  • Not operate the vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Report any incident or damage to the rental company immediately
  • Cooperate with us during the claims process and provide all requested documentation promptly
  • Not make any fraudulent or misleading claims

9. Exclusions

Your Rental Shield policy does not cover:

  • Damage resulting from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Damage from a breach of the rental agreement or local traffic laws
  • Vehicles rented from peer-to-peer or private platforms (e.g., Car Next Door)
  • Personal belongings lost, stolen, or damaged inside the vehicle
  • Mechanical or electrical failure not caused by an accident
  • Racing, competitive driving, or use on a racetrack
  • Damage occurring outside the policy coverage dates
  • Vehicles not listed on your policy or outside our covered vehicle categories
  • Use of the vehicle for commercial freight or public transport purposes (unless specifically insured as Bus/Coach)
  • Claims made more than 30 days after the incident

10. Limitation of Liability

Rental Shield's maximum liability under any policy is limited to the coverage amount stated in your policy (up to $100,000 AUD). We are not liable for any indirect, consequential, or incidental damages, including loss of income, travel costs, accommodation costs, or any other expenses beyond the rental car excess and covered charges.

Our service is a reimbursement product. We reimburse you after you have paid the rental company. We do not act as a substitute for the rental company's own insurance or liability obligations.

11. Intellectual Property

All content on the Rental Shield website — including text, graphics, logos, icons, images, and software — is the property of Rental Shield and is protected by Australian and international copyright laws. You may not reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works from any of our content without our prior written consent.

12. Termination

We reserve the right to terminate or suspend your account and refuse any current or future use of our services if you breach these Terms and Conditions, provide false or misleading information, or engage in fraudulent activity.

13. Disputes

If you have a dispute regarding your policy, claim, or our services, please contact us at info@rentalshield.com.au. We will endeavour to resolve all complaints within 10 business days.

If we are unable to resolve the dispute to your satisfaction, you may escalate the matter to the relevant consumer protection authority in your state or territory, including the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

These Terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia.

14. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms and Conditions from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of our services after changes have been posted constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.

Material changes that affect existing policyholders will be communicated via email.
