Queensland rental agreements often carry a larger damage excess than equivalent hires in Sydney or Melbourne — commonly $4,000 to $6,000, and higher again for 4WDs, campervans and vehicles hired for far-north travel. The reason is straightforward: the state’s hire fleet covers a lot of long-distance, high-risk touring, and operators price the risk accordingly.
Between November and April, far north Queensland gets intense tropical downpours. Flash flooding across low causeways, aquaplaning on the Bruce Highway and severely reduced visibility all make incidents more likely. Note an important limit that applies to every excess policy, including ours: driving into known floodwater is excluded. Cover applies to legally open roads — if a road is closed or flooded and you drive it anyway, the claim will not be paid.
The Bruce Highway north of Rockhampton, the Warrego heading west, and the Capricorn inland all carry heavy road-train traffic. Stone spray from passing freight is the single most common cause of windscreen chips in Queensland, and unfenced cattle stations mean livestock on the road is a real hazard at dawn and dusk. Windscreen, glass, tyres and animal strikes are all covered up to your policy limit.
Cairns and Townsville are major campervan and 4WD pickup points for Daintree, Cape Tribulation and Atherton Tablelands trips. These vehicle classes attract a higher rental excess and a higher daily counter waiver. Select the correct vehicle type when you get your quote so the policy matches what you are actually driving — and check whether your intended route includes unsealed sections, which most rental agreements restrict.
